International Day for Monuments and Sites (IDMS) 2024

The train revolutionised the way we travelled by transporting large numbers of passengers and cargo over long distances, quickly and safely. It enabled the circulation of ideas and the social, economic, technological and cultural development of countries.

On 18 April, International Monuments and Sites Day, in addition to the train's influence on literature and the arts, we remember António de Moura Soares Velloso, manager of the Guimarães Railway, who 140 years ago allowed the first industrial exhibition of the city's birthplace, the Palácio de Vila Flôr, to be built on his property.
