CP - Comboios de Portugal officially launched the new Green Rail Pass on 21 October 2024. This innovative transport ticket promotes more accessible and sustainable mobility for residents in Portugal as it allows unlimited journeys on various rail services for a fixed monthly price in a bid to boost the use of rail transport throughout the country.
As of 6 p.m., 2,230 of these passes had been sold.
The Green Rail Pass is designed to cover a wide range of services. For just €20 for 30 days, passengers can travel on Regional trains, InterRegional trains (2nd class), Lisbon and Porto Urban trains (outside the areas covered by the metropolitan intermodal passes), Coimbra Urban trains and Intercidades trains (2nd class, with compulsory seat reservation in advance). This new offer increases flexibility for users, but also adapts to the needs of those who travel frequently on routes outside the metropolitan areas.
In addition to the 30-day version, the Green Rail Pass can also be purchased for periods of 60 or 90 days, at a cost of €40 and €60 respectively. This pass is exclusive to residents of Portugal and can be loaded onto the CP Card which allows passengers to top up their transport ticket quickly and easily, either at CP ticket offices or at the new automatic machines at stations in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
One of the great novelties of the Green Rail Pass is the inclusion of the Intercidades service, where passengers can travel in 2nd class, as long as they make a seat reservation no more than 24 hours in advance. Reservations can be made online, at ticket offices and at the new automatic machines, and it is possible to book two journeys a day at no extra cost. The obligation to book ensures comfort and organisation on long-distance journeys. However, it is important to note that the pass is not valid on Alfa Pendular services, international trains (such as the Celta) or 1st class journeys.
This pass has replaced the old National Rail Pass, offering a wider range of services and further promoting the use of public transport. Although the Green Rail Pass cannot be used in conjunction with other discounts, its cost-benefit ratio is highly attractive, making it a very competitive option for those travelling regularly around the country.
CP is committed to offering solutions that contribute to more sustainable and economical mobility to improve its customers' experience. The launch of the Green Rail Pass reinforces the company's role as a promoter of green mobility and of rail transport as the best option for reducing the ecological footprint, while providing accessible and comfortable journeys for all passengers.
