Since it wen on sale a month ago, CP - Comboios de Portugal has sold 30,000 Green Rail Passes.
Some 61% are new passes, while 39% of customers have swapped existing passes for Green Rail Passes. During this period, more than 70,000 bookings have been made for journeys on Intercidades trains. The vast majority of them, around 75%, were made via digital channels.
The figures also show a high level of take-up by young people, demonstrating this age group's concern for greener and more sustainable mobility and their choice of more accessible and comfortable journeys that reduce their ecological footprint: 23% of passes were purchased by young people aged between 21 and 30, to which must be added a further 17% of passes from young people under 20.
The Green Rail Pass is an innovative transport ticket that aims to promote more accessible and sustainable mobility for residents of Portugal. This pass allows unlimited journeys on various rail services for a fixed monthly price, and is a bid to boost the use of rail transport throughout the country.
The new pass is in line with CP's mission to stimulate green mobility and territorial cohesion. The implementation of the Green Rail Pass reinforces our commitment to quality, economical and sustainable public transport for all, encouraging more and more citizens to opt for the train when travelling and always with a view to improving the experience of its customers. The positive environmental impact of this endeavour benefits the whole country by helping to meet environmental targets.
The Green Rail Pass, which costs €20 for 30 days, means passengers can travel on Regional, InterRegional (2nd class), Lisbon and Porto Urban trains (outside the areas covered by the metropolitan intermodal passes), Coimbra Urban trains and Intercidades trains (in 2nd class, with compulsory seat reservation in advance). In addition to the 30-day version, the Green Rail Pass can also be purchased for periods of 60 or 90 days for €40 or €60 respectively. This pass is exclusive to residents of Portugal and can be loaded onto the CP Card, a card that allows passengers to top up their transport ticket quickly and easily, either at CP ticket offices or at the new automatic machines available at stations in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
One of the great novelties of the Green Rail Pass is the inclusion of the Intercidades service, where passengers can travel in 2nd class, as long as they make a seat reservation up to 24 hours in advance. Reservations can be made online, at ticket offices and at the new automatic machines, and it is possible to book two journeys a day at no extra cost. The reservation requirement says that long-distance journeys are comfortable and organised.
Although the Green Rail Pass does not stack with other discounts, its cost-benefit ratio is highly attractive, making it a very competitive option for those who regularly travel around the country.
