UNESCO Heritage– Guimarães
A train journey back to Portugal’s origins.
An ancient city and the "Cradle of Portugal". The main events took place in Guimarães in 1128 with King Afonso Henriques, which gave rise to independence and the birth of a new nation.
Its historical centre preserves a legacy embodied in its granite streets and built structures, which represent traditional construction techniques. In 2001, UNESCO recognised its importance and classified it as a World Heritage Site. Strolling through the Historical Centre of Guimarães is like discovering the secrets of a unique heritage. Wander through narrow streets, and you'll discover the beauty of squares and plazas.
In addition to the emblematic Castle, the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança and the Penha Sanctuary, Guimarães is rich in customs, culture and traditions, such as the Gualterian Festivities and the Nicolinas Festivities. In 2012, it was the European Capital of Culture.
The unique gastronomy, ranging from stuffed pork belly to toucinho do céu, is not to be missed!
