UNESCO Heritage – Lisbon

Discovering the capital of the discoveries, the city of the seven hills

Lisbon was the centre of the discoveries, an era represented by the Portuguese and European navigators who introduced "New Worlds to the World". Reflecting a time and context when the city was the benchmark for globalisation, and timeless monuments were erected for history.

King Manuel I built the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery - icons of universality, power and empire - symbolise an indelible mark on the history of Portugal and its heritage. In 1983, UNESCO classified them as World Heritage Sites because they are two unique references to the Manueline style and because they represent the process of expansion and discovery that has changed the worldview since the 16th century.

28 years later, it was Fado's turn. With its epicentre in Lisbon, Unesco declared this valuable form of urban, traditional and authentic musical expression Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2011.

Visit the city of the seven hills and get carried away by a place of inspiration for people and the arts. Visited by millions of people, Lisbon continues to be a "Gateway to the World".
