How do I validate my Ticket or Pass?
Tickets, passes and season tickets
On trains operating urban services in Lisbon and Porto, you must validate tickets, passes and season tickets, and the process is simple: simply hold your ticket or pass against the validator (found at stations) and wait for the green light.
If a red light appears, the validator needs further information to complete the process. In this case, you will hear a different sound and a message explaining the next step will appear on the validator’s screen.
If, whilst validating your ticket, you hold your card in front of the black circle for a few seconds longer, the message will remain on the validator’s screen.
At stations with controlled-access gates, validation takes place as you pass through the relevant gates.
Green Rail Pass
On Lisbon Urban Trains, you must validate the Green Rail Pass before each journey at compatible validators or through controlled-access gates.
On Porto Urban Trains, the Green Rail Pass is validated on board by the ticket inspector, as the station machines are not yet compatible with this ticket.
On Intercidades, Regional and Interregional trains, staff validate your Green Rail Pass on board. Please present your Green Rail Pass to the ticket inspector when asked.
Validating your ticket, where required, helps you avoid a fine, in accordance with Law No. 28/2006 of 4 July 2006, as currently in force.
