A Year of the Green Rail Pass: 650,000 Subscriptions Sold

A record was broken in September, with over 67,000 passes sold in a single month.

Created to promote sustainable and accessible mobility, reduce carbon emissions, and encourage the use of rail transport across the country, the Green Rail Pass (Passe Ferroviário Verde) has seen growing uptake throughout its first year of implementation. Since the measure came into force on 21 October 2024, more than 650,000 subscriptions have already been sold for this pass from CP – Comboios de Portugal (Portugal’s national railway company), which allows unlimited train travel nationwide for €20. September saw a record number of subscriptions sold in a single month: over 67,000.

The data reveals that about half of the passengers travelling with the Green Rail Pass have used more than one type of service. In its first year of operation, almost 2.2 million seat reservations were made on Intercidades (Intercity) trains, and approximately 28% of the passes were acquired by new customers.

The Green Rail Pass costs €20 for 30 days, allowing passengers to travel on Regional, InterRegional, and urban trains in Lisbon and Porto (outside the areas covered by metropolitan intermodal passes), Coimbra urban trains, and also on long-distance Intercidades trains (in 2nd class, with a mandatory advance seat reservation, for up to two journeys per day). In addition to the 30-day version, this pass can also be purchased for periods of 60 or 90 days, costing €40 and €60, respectively. The ticket is exclusive to residents in Portugal and can be loaded onto the CP Card.

It is worth noting that, with the recent launch of new functionalities on the CP website and App, customers can now digitally request the CP Card, as well as top up the Green Rail Pass, on the App. This makes it the first entirely digital Monthly Pass in Portugal.

This innovative ticket earned CP a place among the finalists for the Transport Ticketing Awards 2025, one of the largest awards in transport ticketing and mobility. The Green Rail Pass was nominated in the "Best Equity and Inclusion Initiative" category, which sought to recognise an initiative promoting inclusion in public transport, helping to make transport services accessible to all.

The Green Rail Pass reinforces CP’s commitment to promoting sustainability and territorial cohesion, encouraging more and more citizens to opt for rail transport, contributing to more sustainable and economical mobility, and increasing the competitiveness of public transport. The pass functions as a global solution because it does not limit use to specific services or regions, being completely flexible, simple, and inclusive, always aiming to improve the lives of customers.
