Alstom and Talgo have been invited to submit tenders for the supply of high-speed trains

The tender process invited the companies following the pre-qualification stage.

CP – Comboios de Portugal announces that the pre-qualification stage of the tender for the supply and maintenance of high-speed trains for passenger services has been completed.

After analysing the two bids submitted, the selection panel approved the admission to the tender of the bidding companies: Alstom (ALSTOM Ferroviária Portugal, S.A. and ALSTOM Ferroviaria S.p.A.) and Patentes Talgo, S.L.

CP will invite both companies to submit bids to supply the rolling stock CP will purchase.
The contract covers the purchase of 12 high-speed multiple units, associated spare parts and specialised tools, as well as an option to purchase a further eight multiple units. The tender, with a base price of €504 million, also includes a comprehensive maintenance service, which the successful bidder will carry out in the two years following receipt of the first train.

The next stages are tender submission and evaluation, followed by the decision. The tender schedule provides for the contract to be signed in the first quarter of 2027, with the first train due to be delivered in the first quarter of 2031.

These new railcars will provide over 500 seats, will be adapted for people with reduced mobility, and will include bicycle spaces, Wi-Fi, USB-C sockets and a video surveillance system.

CP is currently undertaking its largest ever investment in rolling stock. It should be noted that, alongside the acquisition of these new high-speed railcars, CP signed a contract with Alstom for the supply of 153 trains for urban and regional services, which are due to begin delivery in 2029. The 22 units for the Regional service, under the procurement contract signed with Stadler, have already begun to arrive in Portugal and are currently undergoing the type-approval and certification process.

“This tender is an important step towards making CP’s entry into high-speed rail a reality. These decisive investments mean we are preparing the company to meet the mobility needs of the coming decades, with a more modern and efficient service capable of bringing people and regions closer together,” the CP Chairman said.  “Against a backdrop of strong growth in demand for rail transport, the renewal of the rolling stock fleet plays a crucial role in strengthening CP’s responsiveness and in the continuous improvement of our customers’ travel experience,” Pedro Moreira added.
